2020 Boryspil Airport Passenger Throughput Drops to the Level of 2009

07 October 2020

By the results of September 2020, Boryspil International Airport handled 554 485 passengers which is 66% less than for the same period of the previous year (1 649 thousand passengers in September 2019 ). Total passenger flow for the period of these 9 months amounted to 4 058 215 passengers, which is 65% less than for the same period of 2019.

The busy season of 2020 in aviation is over. Due to the restrictions, imposed by the Ukrainian government in August, in September not only the hasidic program failed, but also we received 30% less passenger throughput. The hub model became unrealistic as we are losing about 3 million transfer passengers. Aviation industry has already reduced its expenditures to the end limit just to withstand this complicated period. The quarantine limitations implemented by countries still remain the stop factor for the passengers.

The analysis of the statistics within the period from January till September 2020 provides us with more accurate forecast of the expected passenger flow as of the end of the year.

Boryspil International Airport passenger throughput in 2020 will drop to the level of 2009 that leads to the fold decrease of Boryspil International Airport State Enterprise revenues compared to 2019”, said Pavlo Riabikin, CEO of Boryspil International Airport.

Furthermore, within these 9 months the share of the transfer passengers has decreased comparing to the same period of the previous year. For the period from January till September 2019,  2 597 thousand transfer passengers were handled and it comprised 22,4% of overall passenger flow, yet for the same period of 2020, only 418 thousand passengers were handled, reaching 10,3% from the total passenger throughput.
