Barrier-free airport: Boryspil International Airport continues implementation of measures for barrier-free infrastructure facilities

11 August 2023

Boryspil International Airport continues to adapt the existing infrastructure as part of the project in creation of barrier-free space. From the beginning of 2023, the airport is bringing the facilities for passengers traveling with children and passengers with mental differences and/or disabilities into compliance with the standards of barrier-free accessibility, according to the findings of an audit, which was conducted by leading experts on barrier-free accessibility.

We would like to remind you that Boryspil International Airport has been chosen as a basic infrastructure facility where barrier-free standards are going to be introduced, and will later be scaled to other airports in Ukraine. The project is being implemented within the framework of the National Strategy for the Creation of a Barrier-Free Space in Ukraine for the period up to 2030, that was developed and approved within the framework of Olena Zelenska’s initiative, the first lady, and in accordance with the decree of the President of Ukraine.

Leading experts on barrier-free accessibility together with Boryspil airport specialists have already carried out monitoring of the current state of accessibility of facilities for persons with disorders and reduced abilities and low-mobility groups, that is an audit and assessment of 25 universal toilet cubicles, 10 common toilet rooms, navigation aids in the airport terminals. We have already received reports and recommendations from experts on the assessment of premises for accessibility for passengers with functional differences, arrangement of rooms for passengers with children and with disabilities, arrangement for the “quiet” room. Reports and recommendations are obtained taking into account the needs of the mentioned categories of passengers, state building standards and principles of universal design.

In particular, employees who are involved in handling passengers with personality disorder and/or disabilities are constantly trained in the Training Center of Boryspil International Airport in order to maintain their skills and to comply with certification requirements. In addition, a special training program for handling passengers with reduced mobility has been developed at Boryspil International Airport and approved by the State Aviation Service; this program covers special aspects of servicing passengers with various mental disorders and/or disabilities.
