Boryspil International Airport conducted training for 520 aviation security specialists using innovative CASRA simulators
09 January 2024
In the period from July to December 2023, the ICAO Aviation Security Training Center at Boryspil International Airport conducted training and testing of 520 aviation security specialists using an educational computer program developed by CASRA, the international company (Center for Adaptive Security Research and Applications). Thanks to the Memorandum signed by Boryspil Airport and Culmen International, a leader in the field of international security and technological solutions, promoted by The Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, licenses for the use of the X-RAY TUTOR 4 educational program on CASRA computer simulators were granted in the second half of 2023, and the term of their use was extended for another 6 months of 2024.
12 levels of difficulty were determined at the first stage of using the training program, however, since the employees of the airport’s Aviation Security Department achieved high results during the training process on these simulators, the company added 6 more levels of difficulty. Each employee goes through his own special training program, as an individually adaptive system of levels of varying complexity is used and each user is provided with images according to his/her knowledge, abilities, skills and practical experience.
For the most life-like learning and testing process, CASRA has integrated all common image enhancement features to provide that exact realistic image viewing experience an AvSec operator would have at the workplace, whether at a checkpoint or screening point. During the 6 months since the simulator has been in operation, about 50 employees reached levels 10 to 12, 7 are at level 13, and one operator each reached levels 14, 16 and the maximum level of 18.
Lyubov Hvorostyanko, an instructor of operational training of the Aviation Security Department, is at the maximum level of 18, she spent more than 230 hours training and analyzed 98,080 images. It is worth noting that in order to pass the 17th level, you need to answer 93% of the tasks correctly, but at the 18th level, the employee has no right to make a mistake, because the threshold for passing this level is 100% of correct answers. Moreover, the maximum level covers 10 million X-ray images, each of which must be correctly interpreted for aviation security issues. Such indicators demonstrate not only the high professional skills of the operators of technical means on avsec control, but also their complete readiness to identify and prevent any threats.
Despite the flights non-operating, Boryspil International Airport is constantly continuing improvement of aviation security measures at the airport and maintenance an appropriate level of qualification of the personnel responsible for ensuring the aviation security of civil aviation, in order to quickly resume flights according to the requirements of international standards and the current legislation of Ukraine, as soon as it is possible under flight safety issues.
