The Ukrainian market to rank one of the main places in the development strategy of the Polish airline LOT until 2028

06 October 2023

On October 5, 2023, a presentation of the business strategy of the largest Polish airline LOT for 2024-2028 took place in Warsaw, Poland. In its business strategy, LOT confirms that being the main air gate of Ukraine, Boryspil International Airport is its important strategic partner for the resumption of airline flights to Ukraine.

LOT sees great opportunities in the Ukrainian air transportation market: the resumption of flights as a mutually beneficial cooperation between Poland and Ukraine will expand the network of air routs in Eastern Europe. Today several million Ukrainians are staying in Poland, so a convenient and fast connection with Poland is more pressing and urgent than ever. The resumed air connection will become a serious segment of the air transportation market as soon as the sky of Ukraine is open to civil aviation.

Oleksiy Dubrevskyy, Director General of Boryspil International Airport, was invited to the presentation of the business strategy until 2028 of LOT airline. He noted: The absence of air connection for almost two years clearly demonstrates the immense importance of aviation for the international connection of Ukraine with European countries for citizens, for the population, for the development of our economy. At first glance, aviation may seem non-priority now compared to more immediate social spheres, but maintaining the infrastructure and operational readiness of airports is difficult to exaggerate to ensure a rapid recovery after the war, to return Ukrainians to their homes, to restore the destroyed infrastructure. After the outbreak of a full-scale war, Boryspil International Airport was not funded from the state budget or any other macroeconomic support programs, so now it is very important to maintain existing and establish new ties with potential partners and investors. After all, without external support, the resumption of air traffic and the aviation industry of Ukraine as a whole can take more time and be more difficult than we expect. Currently, any support of the aviation industry of Ukraine by international partners and airlines will positively influence the develipment of a strategy for the resumption of air traffic. Here, in Warsaw, we see the interest of the international air community in restoring Ukraine’s role in international air traffic, because the Ukrainian market always was and will be one of the key ones. Ukraine is a great country, and our task is to be ready to provide the mobility of our multi-million population. And Boryspil Airport is now best prepared for this. ”

During a personal meeting, Michal Fijol, CEO of LOT Polish Airlines, assured: “We highly appreciate the partnership with Boryspil Airport and do hope to expand our cooperation in future. It is thanks to Boryspil International Airport, LOT aims to restore connection with Ukraine as soon as the situation is safe and secure. ” Negotiations were also held with Stanislav Voytera, the president of Polish Airports SE (PPL), the leading organization of air transport infrastructure in Poland. He expressed his support and plans for further partnership: “We understand the importance of the Ukrainian aviation ecosystem for building a full-scale air transportation market not only in Poland, but throughout Europe. Given the current situation in Ukraine, we hope for the resumption of flights as soon as possible and the involvement of Ukrainian airports and Ukrainian airlines in regular flights between our countries. ” During these negotiations, agreements were reached on future flights between Boryspil Airport and Polish airports, in particular with Warsaw Chopin Airport, which is the homebase of Poland’s national air carrier LOT Polish Airlines.
