Top Managers on Leadership and Risks. Boryspil Airport Promotional Platform Discussion

14 December 2018

On December 6th, “Infrastructure World Café: Promo Search” event took place on the premises of the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Arts. Within the framework of the project, under the slogan “The Art of Dialogue with a Passenger: Innovating Look on a Fixed Concept”, a panel discussion was held – “What it takes to be a ‘fly’ leader”. The panel discussion coordinator was the Kyiv International Economic Forum, the longtime partner of Boryspil International Airport.

The organizers of the event were the Association of Transit Advertising Operators of Ukraine, Boryspil International Airport, the Aviation Committee at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Ukraine, and the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Arts.

Yurii Pivovarov, the head of the organizing committee of the Kiev International Economic Forum, was the moderator of the panel discussion “What it takes to be a ‘fly’ leader”.

During the panel, the risks that occur in the state-owned enterprises, and in the Ukrainian businesses as a whole, were discussed, as well as the ability to undergo change and the role of leaders in its implementation. In particular, the discussion participants considered: first, the main challenges and future risks faced by state enterprises and businesses; second, the possibility of change and the importance of leaders in these changes; third, the role of innovation and whether it can be implemented in state-owned enterprises.

First speaker of the panel discussion, First Deputy General Director of Boryspil International Airport Yevhenii Dykhne:

“Numerous things depend on the logic of the head manager. If he is guided by business logic, math and intellect in his endeavors – the leader will always find correct solutions. Even if there is a small percentage of mistakes made, a true leader will always find the moral strength to admit to them and thus, it will only emphasize the number of correct decisions that he has already made. You cannot be afraid! Also important, the manager must be a leader and an ideologist, because today, one of the motivating factors for successful work is the creation of an ideological environment. We need to work to ensure that the company is in a patriotic mood,” said Yevhenii Dykhne.

The speaker stressed that for a leader it is important to have a sense of humor and a good intuition, as well as to be a talented person all around.

“The leader should also have a sharp mind, which will allow him to make super quick decisions with lots of incoming data from the outside and inside,” – summed up the First Deputy General Director of Boryspil Airport.

In his turn, the Deputy CEO of the State Enterprise “NPC Ukrenergo “for Communications and International Cooperation, Mykhailo Bno-Airiian, drew attention to the importance of changes in state-owned enterprises.

“We received a company where people worked by inertia, even entire dynasties. So, the first thing that be began to change was the system of wages, first and foremost, for the middle management. Secondly, we understood that we needed to build a “pyramid”. That is why after the first implemented changes we began to look for and hire people from the market. And I am quite proud of this. We now offer competitive wages and a chance to become a part of changes not only within the company, but also in the country,” – highlighted Mykhailo Bno-Airiian.

Zhanna Kryuchkova, founder and managing partner of Jansen Capital Management, a member of the board of directors of construction company Stikon, from the standpoint of experience in private business, emphasized the importance of two components, from which the transformation of business begins.

“As for the transformation of companies, it includes two components. Emotions are a driving force and a powerful impulse. When we talk to company leaders, we ask what emotions mean to them. Most talk about the reaction. But in translation from Latin it is excitement and a drive to action. The second component is reason. From these two begin all changes, transformation,” – said the speaker.

Participants in the panel had also discussed the experience of introducing innovations in the real sector of the Ukrainian economy. Speakers analyzed the main stages of progressive business ideas implementation and the possible difficulties in their way, given the economic processes in the country.

In the beginning of panel discussion moderator Yuri Pivovarov spoke of the research happening on the subject of leadership. Namely, the difference between the perceptions of challenges of the leaders of the EU and Ukraine. The moderator learned about the challenges faced by speakers and revealed the role of leaders of change in the era of innovation. Yuri Pivovarov brought the panel discussion to a close with an insightful Jack Welch quote, “If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.”
